There are so many new and amazing children's books for fall this year that I'm so excited to start off with one of my favorites, They All Saw a Cat by debut author and illustrator Brendan Wenzel (published by Chronicle Books). I first got a chance to preview the book at the Chronicle Books Fall 2016 Children's Book Preview back in May (post here). The book takes you through the perspective from various animals and how they see the cat -- scary from a mouse's point of view, small from a bird's view, cuddly to a little kid. Author Wenzel is said to be the next Eric Carle and it's no wonder this book was being battled and auctioned between eight publishers with Chronicle Books winning out!
Here are some of the images of the book's interiors that showcase Wenzel's beautiful illustrations:
As simple as this book may seem, I love the pure depth of the book once you open it up and start to read it. Why does a mouse see the monstrous cat with such ferocious teeth? Why does a bee see a mosaic of brightly colored dots? Kids will find it fun to see all the different views and perspective of the same cat. There are lots of fun storytelling moments and discussions here with young toddlers and kids. I enjoy pointing out to my daughter Wenzel's illustration style (watercolor and pencil) and his use of color that shows emotion for each animal.
They All Saw a Cat is sure to be favorite bedtime reading book that kids (and parents) will never get tired of!
I can't forget that while at the Children's Book Fall Preview, I got to hold the absolute cutest and softest two week old kitty! She was "mewwing" every so sweetly.
Here's the book trailer for you to enjoy!
