I so happy today to be a part of the I am Harriet Tubman Blog Tour! The Ordinary People Change the World series by Brad Meltzer and illustrated by Christoper Eliopoulous has a special place in my heart. It's one of Chloe's favorite book series because she loves learning about real people in history from the perspective of when they were kids. The duo's newest book, I am Harriet Tubman tells about Tubman's heroic place in history in the fight against slavery.
Harriet Tubman was one of the key players in the Underground Railroad who helped numerous slaves escape to freedom from Maryland where she was dubbed the "Moses of her people". Over the course of eleven years, Tubman went back to Maryland thirteen times to help free around seventy slaves. I asked my daughter Chloe what she thought about Harriet Tubman after reading this book. She told me that she loved how Tubman was really strong and didn't just think about herself. She worked hard to help other people throughout her whole life.
Harriet Tubman, like all of the other heroes featured in the Ordinary People Change the World give kids a taste of history in a tone and level that is perfect for young readers. With Tubman, even with her story of immense hardships, there are glimmers of humor that kids can relate to and understand. I like how at the end of the book, there's a timeline about her life. You learn how Tubman helps the North by being a spy during the Civil War and how she continued to be an activist for women's rights. I'm looking forward to her being the first woman and African American on a $20 bill!
I am Harriet Tubman is an inspirational story like no other that all kids will enjoy reading.
