I immediately headed for the garage with my bag of recycled bits from class. Lulu followed me, panting excitedly and tip-tapping her feet on the ground behind me.
"What’s in the bag there?" Lulu asked curiously.
"Recycled bits," I replied.
"That doesn’t sound exciting," whined Lulu. "Any food in there?"
"No."
"Is it time for dinner yet?"
"No!" I said, annoyed. "Look, Lulu this is a really exciting contest for me. It’s important. You know how I love to tinker, right?"
"Oh yes, the tinker binkering," said Lulu.
"It’s tink-er-ing," I corrected.
"Tink-er-BINK-errrrr-ING!" Lulu shouted stubbornly.
"Tinnnk—er—ing," I corrected again with a firm look in my eye.
"Got it, tinkering" Lulu sighed. "But just so you know, tinker binkering is much more fun to say!"
"Oh Lulu!" I relaxed and laughed. We both started to giggle infectiously. Lulu really knew how to get my giggles going.
I took out my notebook from class to show Lulu some of the ideas of what I was going to make. I opened it to a page where I had a sketch of a fantastic headpiece.
"Too heavy" Lulu said.
"Here’s one of a necklace with computer keys," I explained.
"Too techy," Lulu replied.
"Ok, well how about this cute robot?" I asked nervously.
"Now you’re talking!" Lulu exclaimed. "It’s very cute, but definitely not as cute as meeee!"
"You’re the cutest Lulu. There’s no contest there." I assured her. Lulu tends to get jealous whenever there’s a mention of the word "cute" and it’s not about her.
For the next few days, I came straight into the garage after school with the sound of Lulu’s paws always tip-tapping behind as she followed me into the garage.
We would blast music and Lulu would try to sing all the high notes. By the end of the week, all her high notes ended up giving me a headache. I had to turn the music off so I could really concentrate.
Of course, this didn’t stop Lulu the chatterbox.
"The eyes are too big."
"Don’t make it bigger than me. I’m scared."
"Now it’s too small."
"What does this do?" Beep. Bonk.
"Are we done yet?"
"Isn’t it time for dinner?"
"I’m starving!" complained Lulu.
After spending all week after school working on my robot, it was finally finished!
"Oh Peaches! Not only is your robot beautiful, it’s super cool!" Lulu exclaimed.
"Thanks!" I said. "I think I am going to call him Robee."
